TU Helmerich Center for American Research
The 25,000-square-foot facility houses the Gilcrease Library and Archive containing nearly 100,000 rare books, documents, maps and unpublished works. The original master plan had the Helmerich Center and Gilcrease Museum separated, and the only way to transport artwork from one building to the other was via conditioned trucks on the property. Key Construction was used as a design-build contractor to create and construct an underground tunnel, referred to as “The Link,” but officially named the Groendyke Gallery. The unique design included placing sod and parking lots over the roof of the four-sided, 360-foot long concrete tunnel so that from the parking lot view, no one really knows there is an underground connection between the two.
